Is there a method to the madness?

The subject of today's post is...naptime.

My sweet little Lancelot loves to sleep. A lot. At unpredictable times. I am so fortunate that he already sleeps 7 hours at night (hallelujah!!), but daytime napping is an entirely different story. One day, he took 6 30-minute naps. The next day, 3 45-minute naps. Yesterday, a 2 hour nap and a 3 hour nap. Some days he'll sleep 5 or 10 minutes off and on the whole day long!

The only discernable pattern thus far is for his first nap of the day. Generally, he'll wake up around 6:30-7:00am, be up for an hour, and then go down for a nap. Sometimes 20 minutes, yesterday for 2 1/2 more hours! So while I can't count on the length of his nap, I can usually count on him going down for a nap after an hour or so.

For the rest of the day, there's no telling what to expect.

I was wondering, do most babies eventually fall into a predictable napping pattern? If so, when does this take place? If I knew when he was going to nap, it would be so much easier to plan my day!

He's napping now, so I'm off to watch the rest of my Voyager episode off my TiVO, and to finish the pumping session that was so rudely interrupted. :)

Have a lovely day!

Hi, over here from Growing a Life. Funny thing about babies, they are all so different. With my first born, he had predictable nap times. With my second, not so. She was like yours, doing lots of cat naps throughout the day, never at the same times. Good news, eventually she settled in and started taking two long naps. I think she was about five or six months old when that happened.

I'd say he's doing great at 2.5 months! Enjoy it until the teething starts! ;)

My first daughter never got on a predictable sleep schedule. Ever. She's now almost 3.

My second, on the other hand, has a schedule that she fell into at about 6 weeks and she gets grumpy if we disturb it. And then falls asleep where ever she is. She slept about 20-22 hours a day at your little one's age; at 10 months, she's down to about 15-18 hours of sleep per 24 hour period. I wish her sister would sleep like her, but she's an insomniac like her mommy.

Such an adorable picture! As for the napping thing, I started reading sleep books (I recommend Weissbluth's Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child) when Isabella was about 4 months old, and started her on a napping schedule outlined in the book for my own sanity so I could plan my day better. Your little one is a bit young yet, but pretty soon you could start getting him on a schedule of your choosing.

PS: Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day. :)

He'll definitely fall into a more predictable nap schedule. Be grateful for the fabulous nightime sleep you're receiving. My little Bode was great at night until he turned 3 months and suddenly, he was up several times in the night. I've found with my two kids their naps and sleep started regulating around 6 months.
