For Christmas this year, my son and I each received a bow and arrow set. My dad is an archery instructor and over the past year we have spent a lot of time at his home happily shooting at a variety of targets he set up in his backyard! He recently created a community-wide archery club for kids so we decided to sign up our son, as a way for an outdoorsy fun outlet and also as a way to have more quality time with family!
(Three generations. I like to imagine I'm Merida from Brave with that particular bow!)
(Manly bonding with weaponry and balloons. Does it get any better?)
Yesterday, the archery club was part of a larger tournament, in which kids were able to walk through the woods and shoot at 3-D targets! Deer, bears, foxes, wolves, all manner of life-sized animals made of some sort of magical material that allows them to be shot with hundreds of arrows, over and over again.
For 6 hours, 9 kids went stomping through the woods, with nary an electronic device among them. There were no complaints of boredom. A few reminders of the need to be courteous to the other archers also at the tournament, but in general, everyone had a spectacularly wonderful time.
Thank you, Ridge Archers for putting on a fantastic event, and providing an activity for our kids that they can enjoy for a lifetime! Thank you, NLE Archers for creating an organization for local kids to learn an amazing skill!
Archery seems to be gaining popularity in many areas. Check and see if your area has an archery range! Most of them will offer classes for beginners and even supply equipment to help you learn!
